چکیده

This paper presents a simple, yet effective method of enhancing the inherent diversity among packet retransmissions in digital communication systems that employ high-order modulations such as M -PSK and M -QAM through frequency-selective channels. Diversity is enhanced by uniquely redefining the bitto-symbol mapping for each retransmission. Finding the optimal mappings leads to iterative solutions of the Quadratic Assignment Problem. More importantly, jointly equalizing transmissions with different mappings only requires a marginal increase in complexity, while providing substantial gains in bit error rates (BER) and frame error rates (FER).

EXIT Chart Analysis of Iterative Demodulation and Decoding of MPSK Constellations with Signal Space Diversity

Bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) schemes have been shown to increase the diversity order. This paper studies the extension of such schemes with iterative demodulation and decoding (ID) using error correcting codes coupled with rotated MPSK signal constellations with different symbol mappings and signal space diversity (SSD). Using extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts, an analysis...

Performance of a Coded Non-Square Quadrature Amplitude Modulation Scheme over Fading Channels

It is shown that a non-square (NS) 2-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) can be decomposed into a single-parity-check (SPC) block encoder and a memoryless modulator with independent in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) symbol mapping. When NS-2-QAM is concatenated with a forward-errorcorrecting (FEC) code, iterative demodulation and decoding of the FEC code and the inherent SPC code of NS-2-QA...

Iterative Demodulation and Decoding for Protected Satellite Communications

■ Military satellite communications (Milsatcom) systems use frequency hopping over a wide bandwidth to provide protection from hostile jamming, interception, and detection. These systems are being challenged to transport more information at higher rates, among smaller and more mobile terminals, with little or no increase in allocated bandwidth. Meeting these challenges requires advanced bandwid...

Coupling Data Transmission

We consider a signaling format where information is modulated via a superposition of independent data streams. Each data stream is formed by error-correction encoding, constellation mapping, replication and permutation of symbols, and application of signature sequences. The relations between data bits and the modulation symbols transmitted over the channel can be represented in the form of a sp...
